Artist Statement
In Identity in Name, I delve into the profound significance of personal names and their intrinsic connection to cultural heritage. My journey from Hangul to English names prompted a deep contemplation of identity preservation amidst practical necessities. Utilizing fiber, sculpture, and photography as my mediums, I craft pieces that serve as visual narratives of this exploration.
Through the tactile artistry of dyeing cloth and imprinting my name upon it, I celebrate the essence of self and heritage. Each piece becomes a vibrant manifestation of the intricate relationship between my name and identity. Employing a visual language comprising fonts, colors, and shapes, I convey the multiplicity of who I am.
Ultimately, my art is an invitation—a catalyst for dialogue on the profound nature of names, the richness of cultural diversity, and the unifying power of artistic expression. 'Identity in Name' stands as a testament to the beauty of individuality, a celebration of the names that shape us, and a bridge between disparate worlds."
